Efficient and effective machines have taken over our lives today. While this has been helpful for us, it does give rise to problems every now and then. When it comes to coffee makers, the biggest problem that people generally face is the buildup of mineral deposits in their coffee makers.
There are many different ways to descale a Breville Coffee Maker, and lots of different products, many of which are over priced, and some that are not actually designed for it, or will even void the warranty (not to mention being ineffective). So I’ve gone through the trouble of testing out many different descaling products on my own Breville machine, and want to share my results with you.
What is descaling?
Descaling is the process in which a chemical solution is used to remove the mineral deposits from the water. Descaling happens in the water heater and if this is not done periodically, the water heater fails because it gets clogged. You can get a chemical descaler, which is just a cleaner for water heaters. The chemicals are corrosive and can hurt your skin.
Descaling is the process of removing the soft mineral deposits that build up inside a kettle or electric tea maker. Descaling a kettle prevents scale build-up, which can often cause the appliance to lose heat efficiency, gas, or even stop working altogether. Descaling is a tedious task, and if left too long, can eventually lead to a kettle becoming damaged.
Why should you descale your coffee maker?
If you are anything like me, then you probably don’t think twice about the coffee maker in your kitchen. You make coffee, you drink coffee and you never worry about the machine itself. Maybe you clean it when it gets dirty or maybe you don’t. But if you made coffee today and it was anything short of phenomenal,
then you’re missing out! Every coffee lover has heard the tip about cleaning the coffee maker regularly to ensure the best flavor, but why is it so important? A coffee maker needs to be cleaned a couple of times a year to ensure that the water is flowing smoothly through the system without any blockages.
How often should you descale your coffee maker?
Most of the people descale their coffee makers at least once a month. If you have hard water and use your coffee machine on a daily basis, then it is necessary to descale it every month.
This is because with every brewing cycle, the machine will pick up calcium deposits. If the water is too hard the machine may not extract the coffee properly. This can result in a bitter tasting coffee. Also, make it a point to clean the filter after every few uses of the machine. This will ensure better tasting coffee.
How might you descale a Breville coffee maker?
The fastest way to clean the steam wand is to remove the tip, put the wand under hot running water, and use the tip to scrub the wand with a small brush. If you want to descale your machine, remove the reservoir and clean it. Descaling the machine is a two-step process.
First, use a mixture of white vinegar and water to neutralize the scale build-up. You can use a third of a cup of white vinegar and two cups of water for a reservoir the size of the one on the BES900XL. After you’ve followed the correct water-to-vinegar ratio, throw out this solution and make a fresh batch of 50% white vinegar and 50% water.
